Melanie and Jon

You have to wait for the rainbow to find the pot of gold. I shot Melanie and Jon's engagement photos in August. It was one of the few rainy days we've had this summer and we debated rescheduling, but didn't really want to. We waited it out, decided to grab our umbrella's and go shoot. Sure glad we did. We captured a lot of fun shots around downtown and had some fun doing it. Check out a few of our favorites below.

Sierra and Justin

This photo shoot really shows what we are all about on an engagement session. We want to get you that one photo that you can show everybody and be proud of, we want to give you several images that you can post to Facebook, and we want to give you MANY images that you can remember how great of a time we had on the shoot and how great of a time the two of you had together. Sierra and Justin were awesome on their engagement session. We spent a lot of time downtown. I shot photos that they will be proud to print and I shot some photos, like #1 below, that you wouldn't print but really helped to tell the story of them. It gives them a great perspective on themselves and their relationship. I hope they had as much fun as I did....oh, and they are Hawkeye fans so...they are pretty awesome in my book.

Rachel and Eric

I photographed Rachel and Eric's engagement photos in Valley Junction and downtown Des Moines. You may notice that I talk about the weather a lot in my blog posts. The reason is that the weather effects how, where, and when we shoot more than anything else. The weather on this particular day was warm, but nice. We made sure to stay in some shady areas and keep moving to keep from staying in one place too long. Ashley and I are looking forward to working with these two as their wedding day draws closer. Check out a few of our favorites below.

July 26, 2011

Lisa and Andy

I shot these engagement photos for Lisa and Andy back in June. It was a questionable weather day, but in the end it was perfect. The overcast skies gave soft even lighting. The clouds were quite textured and gave a great background. We started near the capitol and headed downtown after that. The shoot went great and we turned out some awesome shots. The shoot ended right as it started to rain. There was one weird moment where we were bombarded and asked for cigarettes. All part of being downtown.

June 17, 2011

Natasha and Scott

I photographed Natasha and Scott's engagement photos a little while back. Luckily the weather has been fairly mild and we were able to get in a lot of shots downtown. These two were great and although Scott claimed to not be a very good "dipper", he did just fine. And the ones that were not so great, were pretty funny. The experience of having engagement photos taken is 90% of the fun. The great photos afterwards are just a bonus.

Ashley and Sean

This past weekend I photographed Ashley and Sean's engagement photos in downtown Des Moines. We shot around the sculpture garden and Meredith's downtown campus. The meredith campus was kind of a new spot for me, but I like shooting in new places. Typically if I shoot in the area I stay on the east side, but this Sunday I ventured over to the west side for some shots. We hit the alley south of Locust and spent a few minutes at Grey's Lake. They are Hawkeye fans...need I say any more?

Behind the Photo

A photo is worth 1,000 words, but sometimes it takes 1,000+ to tell the whole story. There is a story behind every photo we take. Why did we choose to take this shot? What lead us to this location? What was the reasoning behind the pose? How long did I make them sit there like that? Who's idea was it? Etc. So today I am choosing one photo to give you that behind the photo look at.

This is an engagement photo from Angela and Adam's session last year in Omaha. This photo was taken near Gene Leahy Mall around the Old Market area. It was the first time that I'd been able to shoot in this area and there was certainly plenty for me to use in the shoot. It was a cold and rainy day and I had actually been a bit under the weather, but as is usually the case as soon as I started shooting everything else, including feeling crappy, faded away.

There are a couple of giants slides at the east end of the park. How could I not have them take a few on these giant slides. So they, Adam a little reluctantly, climbed to the top and proceeded to try and slide down. About half way down they got stuck. The slides are metal and not really, well slidey. Apparently using cardboard is the way to go since there was a bunch of discarded cardboard sitting around. So when they got stuck half way we all had a good laugh, Adam is even laughing in this particular photo, and I told them to kiss. Imagine that, me telling someone to kiss in front of the camera. Anybody who follows this blog knows the power of kissing photos and that we take a ton. After we finally stopped laughing they scooted off the slides and we continued on around the park. Great photo, great story.

Heather and Treye

From a new Hawkeye fan to established Cyclone fans. Good news for me is I am a fan of both, for 364 days of the year. We shot Heather and Treye's engagement photos around the ISU campus. It was cold. Like really cold, but we didn't let it slow us down. These two were great and it was easy to get some great shots. They had their own ideas and I put the Nuzum Photo touch on them. The results were fantastic. A cute dog, rosy red cheeks, and a snowball fight. Check out a few below.

Carolyn and Kamron

Last weekend I had some early Thanksgiving thankfulness. I was extremely thankful for nice weather. Unfortuneatly due to sickness in the Nuzum house, I had to cancel the originally scheduled engagement shoot for Carolyn and Kamron. It was a rainy miserable day, sickness to boot. So fortunetly for the reschedule it was a beautiful fall day. We shot mostly downtown and a few quickones in Water Works Park. Even downtown, if you hit the right locations, you can find a little fall color. These two will be married next year in Eastern Iowa and we can't wait. Below are a few of our favorites from the session.

October 22, 2010

Levi and Brooke

This past Saturday I shot a RARE, as in first time ever, wedding day engagement shoot for Levi and Brooke. Levi as you may remember worked with us on several wedding this year while Ashley was out on baby leave. Be sure to check out Levi's facebook page, Yamen Photo. Levi and Brooke will be married next October in Des Moines. I can't even start to explain how much fun I had on this shoot, but I will certainly try.

We started out in Valley Junction. It was a cool morning, but not too bad when you got into the sun. We shot all around Valley Junction until we came across a chair. Just a plain wooden chair that was sitting in an alley...so naturally I thought we'd make some use of it. We grabbed the chair and headed for a white wall that I'd been searching for some way to use. Some of the photos with the random chair turned out the best. And the chair would have been a good defense against the guy arguing with himself, had it come to that.

Levi and Brooke had some great ideas of their own that really gave their engagement photos a personal touch. We headed to a field out by the airport....one random field that we could get into...luckily the gate was left open. A little trespassing never hurt anyone. We used 25 balloons in many of the photos. They were fun, unique, and creative. Check out a few of our favorites below.

October 16, 2010

Sarah and Erik

Sarah and Erik were my fourth and final engagement session from last Sunday. These two were a lot of fun and really easy going. It made getting the shots a breeze. We started at Water Works Park...wow, it was the busiest I've ever seen it. There were two weddings taking photos near the fountain as well as 50+ high school kid's taking photos for homecoming. Yikes, the parking was nuts especially since there is only parking for 10 cars normally. We waited it out for a while but decided to move on until they all eventually left. We were able to get a few shots around the fountain, but the best shots came from what we did while waiting. We headed over to the maintenance barn at Water Works. We also hit the Sculpture Park as well as some alleys in the area. Check out our aliens attack photo below...see what I mean by fun. A few of our favorites are below.

October 15, 2010

Sarah and Jacob

Sarah and Jacob were my third engagement session on Sunday. We stuck to downtown locations, did a little walking, and had a great time. As you can see they are Iowa and Iowa State fans. Many of you know the location of these two air conditioning units near Central Iowa Mechanical. They make a fun spot to capture some Iowa and Iowa State love and hate. We had some fun with them and had a great time overall. We followed up the downtown shots by heading over to Water Works Park to finish up the shoot. Great time, great photos.

Kelly and Dan

Last Sunday Kelly and Dan were my second engagement shoot of the day. After racing back from Ames's morning engagement session I met up with Kelly and Dan at Union Park in Des Moines. We were really hoping we would be able to get some shots on the Carousel there or at least on the Rocket Slide. Sadly neither happened. The Carousel was closed and the Rocket Slide was being worked on. None the less, we made the best of it. We also made stops near the Botanical Center, the Science Center, and the old train depot. I had a great time with Kelly and Dan and we are really looking forward to the wedding.

October 14, 2010

Stephanie and Kelly

This past Sunday I shot 4 engagement shoots and 1 family photo session. This is the first of the engagement shoots. Stephanie and Kelly are new to the area and wanted to shoot their photos at Ana Hayden park in Ames. We have shot at several parks in the area and have driven by Ana Hayden many times, but this was the first shoot at the park. I was pleasantly surprised at how many locations and shots we were able to come up with. I had a great time and as you can see below, so did they.

October 7, 2010

Courtney and Matt

This was not the first time I'd photographed Courtney. We actually photographed her senior photos as well. If there is one thing I've learned about taking photos of Courtney, it is to NOT tell her how to pose. She is an incredible poser all on her own. She has a natural ability to look good in front of the camera. So I kept my mouth closed for most of the shoot and let them do their own thing. We shot downtown around Court Ave., the Sculpture Garden, and the Rose Garden.

Jill and Tim

I had a great time shooting Jill and Tim's engagement photos. We shot in Valley Junction to start with and eventually hit both Water Works Park and Gray's Lake. For whatever reason I was in a silhouette mood on Saturday. So be sure to check out the ones below. These two were a lot of fun and we are looking forward to next year's wedding. Check out a few of our favorites below.

September 21, 2010

Angela and Adam

This past Sunday I and the honor of traveling out to Omaha for engagement photos with Angela and Adam. It was my first trip there for a photo shoot and my first trip to Omaha's Old Market. We have been to the Omaha Zoo and other location near there, but we've never been in the Old Market area. Wow. It is unbelievable. Any place that still has brick roads and covered sidewalks gets a thumbs up from me. It was impressive. I'm glad Angela and Adam chose that location.

We also got some shots at nearby Central Park (Gene Leahy), the Joslyn Art Museum, and Central High School. Everything was going great until....we were kicked out of the Joslyn Art Museum's sculpture garden. Twice. I was in a persistent mood. I am even more appreciative of Des Moines' own Pappajohn Sculpture Garden now. Getting kicked off of private property is nothing new, but it's an art center in which I am practicing my art. The worst part of the whole experience was the way the security guard explained it...and I paraphrase..."If the photographer is getting paid, we have to be paid." What? So if I am a family friend doing it for free it is all good? Next time I shoot there that will be what we tell them. I'm sneaky. So we split up and I told Angela and Adam to just walk around while we acted like we were lost and I kept shooting them. We eventually left but returned (we were parked there.) But I wanted to get a few more shots. So we were on the side of the building away from where we'd been kicked off before. I joked that they were still watching us on the cameras....and they were. Two second later a lady security guard comes out of some secret James Bond door to chase us off.

Lesson learned? No, just found the ways to beat the system. Consider us your family friends from now on out. I've included photos of the first security guard kicking us out and the second security guard chasing us off (which apparently jean jackets are back in style, who knew?) Below are a few of our favorites.

September 16, 2010

Carrie and Tyler

This past Sunday I shot another engagement session in downtown Des Moines. Lately we've been shooting in some of the same areas, but the good news is we always find new ways to view Des Moines. We are always looking for a new angle or new view. We also have the best luck with couples. We shoot in a way that really gives each couple's photos a unique look because it is heavily based on their own mannerisms. When we shoot engagement photos we work in a completely open and rarely posed manner.

Everyone knows their own comfort. So we put you in situations and let you get comfortable. The pose in the photo is NOT even close to as important as the interaction. These two were amazing. They have so much fun together and interact in an incredible way. It is the interaction that tells the story, not hand placement or hip rotation....boring.

At one point during the shoot we got a little disconnected from each other as we headed from one location to the next. I was driving around chasing red cars that I thought might be them. The good news is we were in the same location, just at opposite ends of it. We had another fun moment when we headed over to Gray's Lake. I like to let a couple hang out on the bridge and just talk. Hang out. Chat. Have fun. So we headed over there and they were hanging out on the bridge when "crazy talk to myself and my little dog" lady showed up. She also comments on every single person that walks by her. I love people. Even "crazy talk to myself and my little dog" lady. Below are a few of our favorites.

Stefenie and Jason

When someone comes to you and has ideas and they are creative and unique and open to just about anything.....you get excited. Stefenie and Jason wanted something different and unique. Something rustic and urban. Something.....different. We hit just about every alley in Des Moines that's worth walking down. While most of these are cool urban scenery what makes them so unique is the chemistry between Stefenie and Jason. When two people can interact and react to each other it creates something that I can not. A couple of these we may not have gotten had Jason Bradwell from Moonwell Photography and Ikonix Studio not been shooting in the same area. We had a little time to wait for them to finish up and we caught a few of the ones below during that time. Check out what we got...

September 9, 2010

Cassy and Jason

Last Sunday I had an amazing time shooting engagement photos for Cassy and Jason. These two will be getting married next April. Lucky for me I wore my best Hawkeye shirt and not my best Cyclone shirt because Jason is a big Hawkeye fan. It was also good for me because I got to talk about football the whole time. (Go Hawkeyes!) We started out near the sculpture garden downtown, which was pretty busy given that it was Sunday of Labor Day weekend. We wandered through buildings got some more shots and ended up at Gray's Lake for a few. Check out some of our favorites below.

September 2, 2010

Emily and Brent

On Sunday I photographed engagement photos for Emily and Brent. We traveled around downtown from Court Ave., to a secret alley, to the sculpture garden, to Gray's Lake. It was hot and windy. Does that make for good photos? Depends on who you ask. I say...somedays. In this case the photos turned out great. These two were awesome in front of the camera. These two made the engagement session a breeze. Even though the weather was less than desirable, they made the best of it and we had a great time. Below are a few of our favorites...and as always, plenty of kissing photos. Love, love.

August 30, 2010

Heather and Kevin

I shot Heather and Kevin's engagement photos on a Sunday afternoon. We had already rescheduled once due to extreme heat. No one wants to be real sweaty in their photos. Even calling it "glistening" doesn't help. We had a great time and covered a lot of downtown space. We also shot some photos on the new pedestrian bridge downtown. It was a great time and glad we waited out the heat.

August 6, 2010

Liz and Erik

Liz and Erik's engagement photos were my first shoot since Parker was born. I thought I might be a little rusty...but that was definitely not the case. It was a little warm the day of the shoot, but nothing we couldn't handle. We shot all over downtown from the sculpture garden, to court avenue, to the science center. Erik is a singer who apparently can't go out of the house without being recognized. We weren't even 5 minutes into the shoot before a couple of people had stopped Erik having recognized him from a recent performance. Of course I just kept shooting. No reason to stop, we shoot it how it is. Below are a few of our favorites from the shoot.

Stephanie and Jeff - Engagement and Wedding Photos in One Post

So the blog has been WAY WAY behind with all that we've had going on. Time for a little catch-up. In late May I photographed engagement photos for Stephanie and Jeff. We were lucky to get them in! They had been rescheduled once and to get Stephanie and Jeff's schedule in Des Moines to match-up with ours took some great luck. But we got them in only one short month before the wedding.

The two were married on June 26. It was an incredibly hot day, but it's summer and that's to be expected. What was not expected was the awesome trip to Snookies Malt Shop which was located just feet from the ceremony site. When we arrived the malt shop employees were awesome and let us inside to the closed dining area for some air conditioning and photos. Ashley was unable to shoot this wedding with me (due to Parker's pending arrival) so Levi was once again working with me. Stephanie and Jeff held their reception at the same location that Ashley and I were both married at and held our reception, so returning there had special meaning to me. Not to mention that Ashley was not by my side. Levi is great, but Ashley is my other half in many ways. The day turned out beautifully, the families were amazing, and Stephanie and Jeff looked fantastic. Check out engagement and wedding photos below!

July 12, 2010

Michaela and Jon

On to a recent shoot! We have been so far behind on the blog, but were making up for it now. On Friday the 2nd, I photographed engagement photos for Michaela and Jon. We shot downtown in the Court Ave. area. It was the second Friday in a row that I'd shot in the area, but we were able to find some new and unique shots. Every photo shoot has it's own unique story of how things went, how they came together, and how I choose the shots I did. This shoot had a little of everything. It was hot...I mean hot. It was on the same night as the Wing Ding 32 parade and they were setting up for 80/35. We worked around everything and got some great shots. Below are a few of our favorites.

Maddie and Shawn

Never before have I been on an engagement shoot with such a fun and easy going couple. Maddie and Shawn are extremely relaxed and comfortable with each other and in front of the camera. If ever a photo shoot was "free-form" this would be the one. It was a little warm out but we had a great time working our way around the Rose Garden, Art Center, and Greenwood Park. These photos hold the 1,000 words you are looking for. So I will shut-up...on to the photos...

Hitomi and Justin

Hitomi and Justin are getting married later this year and contacted us to have engagement photos done ahead of the wedding. We shot downtown around the Court Ave. area. I asked Levi Yamen to join me on the shoot and between the two of us we turned out some great shots. Court Ave. on a Friday evening is always interesting and busy. That didn't phase them. See below for some of our favorites.

Above photo by Levi Yamen

Stephanie and Jeff

Two things tend to be true with every engagement session. 1. The guys usually don't like doing photos and 2. The guys usually end up having fun with the photos. Stephanie and Jeff have been awesome to work with. Their engagement photos were taken just a couple weeks ahead of the wedding. Luckily we were able to get them rescheduled after having to cancel earlier this year. We shot at a couple spots including Valley Junction and Water Works Park. I had a great time and Jeff even said he did too. Some of our favorites are below.

May 21, 2010

Ali and chris

This past Sunday I drove to Scranton, IA to photograph engagement photos for Ali and Chris. It was a ton of fun and their fun attitudes just made it that much better. The weather was perfect all be it a little windy. The location had special meaning to them and as we've said before, that is the #1 factor in choosing your location. I also did some video "blogs" from before and after the shoot. You will find those below as well. Check out our favorites from the shoot.

May 5, 2010

Kelsey and Alex

No, we do not ONLY take pictures of people kissing...promise. But what better way to show the love you have for someone.

This past Sunday we had an amazing engagement session with Kelsey and Alex. Early in the day we had a crazy hail storm, later in the day we had another round of rain that threatened our photo shoot. We waited it out and it made for some fantastic shots. We started near court ave. and made our way around a couple blocks. We ended up at the Rose Garden for some great shots during sun set. The rain made things unique. Here is the cool part. While at the Rose Garden we shot some video of the two and asked them a few questions. Watch for a new feature soon...engagement stories. In the meantime, here are a few of our favorites from the shoot.

April 7, 2010

Shelley and Nathan

On Saturday Steve and I photographed engagement photos for Shelley and Nathan. We will be photographing their wedding late this summer. This photo shoot started out at the Botanical Center downtown and ended with some shots near Ikonix Studio downtown. From the very beginning we knew we had some great shots. The Botanical Center is an interesting place to shoot. There are usually lots of people around, especially other photographers, and when sunny the lighting can be spotty. When this happens it can be a struggle to avoid hot spots. Saturday, however, the lighting was great with a mix of clouds outside. We then headed outside downtown for a few more shots. Steve and I hang out in all the cool places. Alleys, under bridges, and in and around run down buildings. Those locations make for some of the coolest photos. Below are a few of our favorites shots from the botanical center and downtown.

Brittany and Nate

This past Saturday Steve had the opportunity to get out and photograph engagement photos for Brittany and Nate. They started out shooting in Valley Junction and finished up taking photos at Raccoon River Park. The morning was kind of chilly, especially in the shade, but as you can see from the photos they had a great time. Brittany and Nate's dog Chewy made sure to get in a few photos. Chewy was excited and all the birds hanging around the lake kept him from being completely focused. They had a great time. Below are a few of our favorites.

March 12, 2010

Tiffany and Kevin

Last night Ashley and I had a fun and interesting engagement shoot with Tiffany and Kevin. With time of the most importance this was the ONE day that we could get the shots in as they are getting married tomorrow! These two were fun and up for whatever stupid idea we had at the time. We probably circled the botanical center 5 times. Luckily the skies were overcast as shooting inside the botanical center when it's sunny can be a challenge with hot spots. After making our laps and hanging out with the giant purple chair for a while we headed outside for a few quick shots. The temp gauge said 42, but it felt like 22....or just 2. Great time and looking forward to this weekend. Check out some of our favorites below!

February 24, 2010

Jennifer and Justin

On Sunday, Ashley and I got out for a chilly but fun engagement session with Jennifer and Justin. We did all we could to have a good time despite the cold temps. They said they were up for anything, which they probably quickly regretted as it lead to a snow fight and climbing through the snow to a bench in the middle of nowhere. Below are a few of our favorite shots.

2009 Behind the Photos Part 1

So here they are...starting with the engagement photos.  These are 5 photos that I selected to tell the stories behind.  It was not easy to pick just five, but these are the ones for 2009 in no particular order...

This first photo is of Stephanie and Scott.  We shot some photos downtown at the new sculpture garden.  This photo only happened because I vandalized some stuff....on accident.  The giant Nomade sculpture to be exact.  This "Please Do Not Touch" sign was affixed to the concrete directly in front of the statue.  I accidentally kicked it and it flew across the ground.  We decided to have some fun with it and this photo is one that we took.  Technically the sign did say "please".....

This next one comes from Micci and Devon's engagement shoot.  This is one of my favorites because it shows something that you wouldn't have seen normally from the shoot.  We shot most of their engagement photos in Downtown Ames on rather warm September 13.  The sun was shining and although we were hiding in the shadows and the alleys it was tough not to sweat a little.  So, kinda gross, but this is the sweat towel.  Something that tends to appear at a lot of engagement sessions and other photo shoots shot in the summer.  We do not have one that we carry around for everyone....uh, gross....but everyone tends to bring one when it's that hot.  It's a good idea.  With real close ups you would definitely see all the sweaty detail.  Not with these two.

Des Moines Iowa Midwest Engagement Photographer

This photo was NOT taken by Nuzum Photo.  It deserves it's correct photo credits.  This photo is copyright Nikki.  Nikki was the self-proclaimed best self shooter.  Everyone these days is holding their camera out away from their face and snapping away.  A tripod isn't always available but you have to snap that shot with you and your friends.  In this case we put Nikki to the test.  Using our 15mm fisheye lens she snapped this shot....perfect....the 2010 Self Shooter Championships have a favorite.

A photographer loves a new playground.  An Iowa farm is an excellent playground.  This photo comes from Kellie and Brian's engagement photos shot on Brian's family farm.  We wondered around across years of history and every location we could think of.  This one came late in the shoot as we were just about to wrap up.  They thought it would be pretty cool to get a shot with one of the old pick-up trucks on the property.  I thought it would be cool to take this one.  We took both.

Des Moines Iowa Midwest Engagement Photographer

The final photo that I chose comes from Nicole and Josh's second engagement shoot.  We split their shoot into two so they could do some inside in the winter and then some outside once it got nicer out.  As you can tell it was a pretty nice day...they did end up in the water.  We shot this photo at Saylorville Lake.  We headed down to the Cherry Glen area and started shooting.  These two were up for pretty much anything.  Josh was really adventurous and suggest jumping in the water.  I won't force anyone to do anything on a shot, but this was awesome for me.  They had a great time and were having a ton of fun...as you can see.

Kellie and Brian

Sunday afternoon I drove up to Ogden for an engagement shoot with Kellie and Brian.  Kellie and Brian are getting married next August.  We took a few photos at a gazebo just on the west side of Ogden.  Then headed out to Brian's parent's farm for some additional photos.  I love the opportunity to shoot any photos on any farm.  They have limitless possibilities and provide a lot of backgrounds.  Kellie and Brian had a specific shot they wanted with an awesome tree.  We started there and then walked around the farm taking shot after shot until we'd circled the farm about 3 times.  The shoot went great and we are really looking forward to next year's wedding.  Below are a few of our favorites.

Mallery and Ben

Sunday morning I had the great opportunity to photograph engagement photos for Mallery and Ben.  Ashley and I will be photographing Mallery and Ben's wedding next September.  We took all the photos downtown in the Court ave. area.  If you follow our blog much, you know we love this area.  I love when we go on a photo shoot and I hear things like "i'm not photogenic" or "what should we do".  Then the photos turn out like these.  Clearly photogenic, clearly knew what to do.  Some might ask, what to do?  The answer is simple.  Be yourselves.  That is what these two did and the photos turned out great.  Below are a few of our favorites.

Jessica and Brett

As you may remember Ashley and I gave away some engagement sessions to couples with awesome engagement stories.  Jessica and Brett our another pair of our winners.  I won't repost the entire story here, but here are the highlights....Jessica is a huge Christmas fan and always wanted to be proposed to on Christmas Eve.  Jessica was graduating from the University of Iowa in May and didn't believe her boyfriend, Brett, would be able to make it.  However, Brett had arranged to make the trip back from Tennessee and surprised Jessica with a Christmas in May.  He had setup a Christmas tree complete with gifts.  Jessica worked her way through all the gifts until she opened the last one.  It was a Precious Moments figurine of a proposal.  Brett got down on one knee and popped the big question.  Awesome story, one which my proposal story does not come close to.  These two will be married next July.  Below are a few of our favorite shots from the shoot.  Congratulations Jessica and Brett.

Three Sunday Engagement Shoots

On the 27th Ashley and I shot 3 engagement shoots.  Each was incredible in its own way.  We hit so many different backgrounds and locations.  In the morning I was in Ames with Christine and Derek, at noon Ashley and I shot photos with Laurie and Matt in studio and at Saylorville Lake, in the afternoon we ventured downtown with Carmen and Ron.  It was an awesome day and the photos are the proof.  Find their blog posts below....

Carmen and Ron

To cap off our trifecta of engagement shoots on the 27th, we photographed Carmen and Ron around the Court Ave. district in downtown Des Moines, IA.  Shooting in the court avenue area is always interesting because of how many people are in the area.  It was especially busy due to Wicked being in town.  Carmen and Ron handled it great and we were able to get some really fun shots.  Court Ave. is easily becoming one of our favorites spots to shoot.  Below are a few of our favorite photos.

On the 27th of September, Ashley and I photographed engagement photos for Laurie and Matt.  I was traveling back from a morning shoot in Ames, and missed the studio shoot.  Ashley took care of it and we moved outside as soon as I arrived.  We traveled up to Saylorville Lake and got some shots both at the Visitor's Center and down by the water.  Watching these two hang out together will put a smile on anyone's face.  They had so much fun and you can tell that it wasn't just because they were on a photo shoot.  They were enjoying every moment and are perfect for each other.  We sent them out into a field and they came back with every plant form stuck to them.  They were awesome sports about it.  Below are a few of our favorites.

Christine and Derek

On Sunday, September 27th, I headed to Ames to shoot engagement photos with Christine and Derek.  We started out on the ISU campus near the Memorial Union and ended up at a park north of Ames.  They had some specific ideas of shots they wanted which always makes things easier.  It also helps them put their own little touch on their engagement session.  The weather was great and the photos turned out perfect.  Below are a few of our favorites.

Micci and Devon

Wow...these two were fantastic.  On Sunday I drove up to Ames, IA to shoot engagement photos for Micci and Ryan.  We spent a lot of time in downtown Ames, in back alleys, and in the middle of the street.  It was a pretty quite Sunday and not a lot of people out and about, so we were able to get a ton of shots.  They had some great ideas of their own and then I threw out all the ideas I could come up with.  It wasn't a HOT day but in the sun it was warm...we clung to the shadows.  It is always best for most photos anyway.  When then headed to the park where they actually got engaged and snapped some more shots.  I had an awesome time and these two were great together in front of the camera.  They were very relaxed and engaging with each other.  Below are just select few of our favorites.

Nikki and Drew

Yesterday, Ashley and I photographed engagement photos for Nikki and Drew.  These two are getting married next year at the Simon Estes Amphitheater.  We shot their photos downtown in the Court Ave district.  Nikki and Drew have an awesome little dog named Remy that broke out his best Fabio moves during his portion of the photo shoot.  Remy is a street tough little Mini-Dachshund strolling the mean sidewalks of Des Moines...ok, maybe that was a bit over the top.  Remy rocks.  Enough said.  Nikki and Drew were great to work with and Nikki, the self-proclaimed, best self shooter even got the chance to self shoot one shot of herself and Drew.  See the first photo below for the results.  Best self shot photo ever.  The shoot was all sorts of good all over downtown.  The shoot featured many things...a dog, the homeless, old underwear, a stopped train blocking us from getting to our shoot destination, mac and cheese for dinner and much, much more.  It was an awesome time.  And one last note, like to give a special shout out to the cousin in the loft with the hangy thing.  Below are a few of our favorite shots...

Mike and Rachel

Last night I photographed an engagement session for Mike and Rachel.  They are an awesome couple from the midwest and met here in Des Moines at Drake University.  We started the session in Valley Junction and then headed over both Water Works Park and Gray's Lake.  The weather was perfect.  Nice cool temperatures, some sun, and some wind.  Made for great photo opportunities.  We had a lot of fun and they were great to photograph.  Below are a few of our favorites!

Ben and Arley

Last Tuesday I photographed engagement photos for Ben and Arley.  We headed downtown and covered some new ground that I hadn't photographed on previously.  As you head towards 4th street and Court Avenue downtown there are some awesome buildings and alley's.  We had a great time and while shooting down there puts both the photographer and the couple on display for all, they handled it perfectly and we had a great time.  Below are just a few of our favorites!

Melissa and Andre - Contest Winners #1

Ashley and I gave away three free engagement sessions this year.  We picked winners randomly and based on engagement story. We had a lot of entries and 3 were selected.  By chance, we were already invited to photograph Melissa and Andre's wedding and they won one of the three shoots.

July in Iowa can be hot, humid, and stormy at times.  On Friday it was a little of all three.  We headed to downtown Des Moines with Melissa and Andre.  The area around the river and the area near the old train depot are always hot spots for Des Moines photographers.  The alleys, buildings, and general backdrop give many picture opportunities.  We sometimes do similar photos at each shoot, but at the same time ALWAYS have something new come from each shoot.  This one was no different.  We started out on the pedestrian bridge near Principal Park.  It was a little rainy, more misty than anything, but quickly stopped and allowed us to get the shoot in.  We ventured down some new alley ways and around some new spots.  Melissa and Andre were great to work with.  I don't think that Andre liked that I brought a camera along, but he was more than a good sport about getting all the photos we wanted.  They were great about going down alley's and the other spots that we choose for the shoot even though they had to put up with me saying we were done and then running off another 100 photos at various locations from various angles.  Either way, these guys were awesome and we are really looking forward to the October wedding!  Below are a few of our favorites...

Jill and Travis

Last Monday I had the opportunity to photograph engagement photos for Jill and Travis.  Ashley and I will be shooting their wedding this upcoming September.  This shoot was actually a reschedule.  We previously had a date set but were forced to cancel due to sporadic weather.  At 3pm when we canceled the shoot it was so dark in West Des Moines that the light sensors had tripped and the evening lights had come on around the area.  At 6pm, the scheduled time, it was blue skies and sunny...that's Iowa weather.  We headed out to Gray's Lake and found some great backdrops.  As a lot of you probably know, Gray's Lake is a hot spot on warm summer days.  Monday was no different.  It was a little warm and the place was packed.  We moved around the lake and got some great shots.  Young Braden even took some pictures.  I handed him one of my cameras and let him snap away, while I got shots of him (see below).  Jill, Travis, and Braden were great to work with and we are looking forward to the big day!  Below are a few of our favorite shots!

Allison and Jason

On Monday I was able to get out and beat the weather to photograph engagement photos for Allison and Jason.  We headed to the Rose Garden and even took a few at the art center.  While I was warned about someone's dislike for photos, Jason, these two were just fine and the photos turned out great.  Here's to hoping the weather holds off for the upcoming shoots this weekend!  Congratulations Allison and Jason.

Amella and Damir

The Rose Garden is a great place to have photos taken and definitely one of our favorites.  On Sunday Amella and Damir chose the Rose Garden to have their engagement pictures taken.  As much time as we spend there taking photos you'd think at some point we would run out of ideas....not the case.  These two were great to work with and open for some of the goofier shots we requested of them.  In the end they turned out great.  These two are comfortable around each other, really know how to make each other laugh, and it really shows.  Congratulations to these two and good luck with the upcoming wedding!  (P.S...we are also doing a downtown night shoot next week with these two, so watch for those photos.)

Maddie and Kyle

Yesterday I was lucky enough to get out and photograph Maddie and Kyle's engagement photos.  They were looking for some shots downtown and it was a perfect day for photos.  These two drove into Des Moines from Minnesota and were ready to go upon arrival.  Engagement shoots are great because it gives us the opportunity to work with each other before the wedding day and get to see how each react to the photo shoot process.  These two were awesome and got me really excited for the big day in September!  And although you couldn't tell it from our favorites here...they didn't kiss in every picture but these two are great together and especially in front of the camera.  Below are just a few of our favorites.

Engagement Session Contest

Our engagement session contest entry deadline recently passed.  Ashley and I have scoured through all the entries and in the end we selected three winners.  We couldn't cut it down to two.  We are contacting the winners and will be posting photos and stories soon.  The winners have some great proposal stories!  Thanks to all that entered!

Nicole and Josh Part II

Yesterday I ventured out to Saylorville Lake with Nicole and Josh.  We originally scheduled outdoor photos but poor weather forced us to complete just studio photos.  Well we got the outdoor stuff rescheduled and made the most of our time.  I had a blast and these two were so much fun!  We climbed up and down the side of the lake and they trekked with me as I tried to figure out where we were headed and what location we would shot at.  In the end we made it through the shoot and turned out some great shots.  Below are just a few of our favorites.

Sara and Mark

Last night Ashley and I had an awesome photo shoot with Sara and Mark.  We were taking engagement photos and traveled all across the Rose Garden and Greenwood park before heading to Water Works Park.  We found great places for photos and made use of most of them.  It was the complete nature tour and we did a little hiking, but from the results I would say it was well worth it.  Below are just a select few of our favorites.

Tara and Nick

Yesterday, Ashley and I photographed engagement photos with Tara and Nick.  They have a late August wedding planned and we will be there for that as well!  Yesterday's warm temperatures were a little taste of what August weather can be like.  We started by taking a few quick photos in studio and then heading out to Water Works Park.  Not everything was in full bloom at WWP, but we had plenty of opportunities for great shots.  We had a great time and a few of our favorites are below.

Sheri and Ryan

This Saturday Ashley and I photographed an engagement shoot with Sheri and Ryan.  These two will be getting married this September.  We tried and tried to get out and shoot some shots with a wintry background but the weather was either too harsh or too nice...the snow would melt much too quick.  We got out this weekend and took some shots both at the Botanical Center and downtown.  Below are a few of our favorites.

Stephanie and Jasen

This past weekend Ashley and I photographed Stephanie and Jasen's engagement photos.  January doesn't lend itself to great outside shots and the unseasonable warm weather didn't help much either.  Everything was melting and it was pretty messy.  We took some shots at the botanical center and followed that up with some shots on the pedestrian bridge and at water works park.  We had a great time and below are some of our favorites.  Congratulations Stephanie and Jasen!

Kim and Don

There are many things that I can say about this photo shoot and the most important is that these two were great to work with!  We had much adversity from the time we started to the time we stopped, but these two were great throughout even with the problems we encountered.  Our first stop was the state capital.  However, we didn't anticipate duel protests/rallies.  So we moved along.  We went to the art center where we were able to take several good shots.  So we thought we'd visit the Rose Garden and Greenwood park while we were there....nope.  Wedding in the Rose Garden, wedding in the ampitheatre, and some fishing thing at the pond.  So we headed over to Water Works Park.  Finally, no people and a chance to take some shots with the two of them.  Below are just a few of our favorites.

Engagement Shoots High and Low

Ashley and I have be lucky enough to have been able to take three couples engagements in the last 48 hours.  Engagement shoots are always a lot of fun because each couple is a little bit different and they get to spend some time alone expressing how they feel for each other.  Weddings are great and love is abound there, but engagement shoots are more personal and a quieter time with the couple.  We will be posting some of our favorite shots from each shoot in the coming days.

Kristen and Ben

On Wednesday, Brian and I were able to get out and photograph Kristen and Ben's engagement photos.  Later this year, Ashley and I will be photographing their wedding in Grinnell.  We decided to do the engagement photos in nearby Lynnville.  It is a small town with some really great backdrops.  The town has a main street perfect for photos containing that small town feel.  They also have a historic mill location.  We got some great shots and our favorites are below.  Can't wait for the wedding!
