Nyah

Another blog from back in September. These are photos of Brian, Amber, and little Nyah. You've seen quite a few photos of these three recently. We shot photos of Nyah all year and also took photos at Brian and Amber's wedding. I figured since they were back on the schedule for more photos, it's about time to show the last ones. These were taken at Grey's Lake in Des Moines. I really is

Zoey and Max

One of the best parts of photographing families repeatedly is seeing how quickly they grow up. I mean ... it's fast. Especially since we typically only see them a few times a year. When Ashley and I first photographed Zoey and Max we were amazed at what little posers they were. They really liked being in front of the camera. Now, they've grown up fast. Real fast. Check out this post that shows a few of their recent shoots including one from this last September.

Lane and Leif

These photos are from last September. I shot them in a small park in Altoona. If you didn't know it was there you'd never even see it. Well hidden among a small neighborhood in the original Altonna area. Lane and Leif were great to work with and I think they had a pretty good time. Crazy enough the high yesterday (Jan 10) was the same as that day (Sep 16.) Check out a few of our favorites from this great shoot.

Haley and Jackson

Taking photos of newborns can be challenging enough. Taking photos of newborns with older siblings is a whole new ball game...with no rules. Ashley has been very into high key, black and white, on white background photos as of late and this fit that bill. Check out a few of Ashley's favorites from Haley and Jackson's photo shoot.

October 21, 2011

Owen and Ethan

Ashley photographed Owen, Eathan, Mom, and Dad back in September. These were taken in the Locust Ave alley area. We really like to shoot there these days as some of our other favorite alleys have been destroyed due to progress. Also known as the building of downtown condos. Going to start a save the alleys foundation to preserve the best photo spots in Des Moines. Check out a few of our favorites below.

Reese and Family

I shoot these photos of Reese and parents and on a private family location. The location was interesting and provided some unique challenges. Mostly low spotty angled sun light as well as a lot of shaded location from some taller trees. It was a beautiful place with lots of options and we got some great shots. You can see a few of our favorites below.

Leilani, Landen, and Eli

I shot these photos of Leilani, Landen, and Eli during a rare session at the Salisbury House in Des Moines. It was a great time of day with great lighting at a great location. Thus the result is great photos. These three are great together and really enjoy having their photos taken. Eli, the little, maybe not so much. But he was pretty good for most of the shoot. The other two are naturals. They were excited and in to the photos the entire time. I would have them in front of the camera and would turn around to find them posing behind my back too. Those were some of the better photos I captured. Check out our favorites below.

Maddox

Getting newborn photos taken in the first two weeks is very important. Once the baby gets any older they get awkward and aren't nearly as sleepy. They want to look around and be active. To get true newborn photos, you got 14 days. Ashley shot this photos of newborn Maddox. Check out a few of her favorites below.

Jager and Family

I shot these photos of Jager back in August. We started in the area around the state capitol and eventually moved to the sculpture garden and library area. Jager has been a great smiler for every shoot we've done with him. We have shot and shot and shot and he just keeps smiling. Just see for yourself... here here and here... and here. Smiley, huh. Check out a few of the latest below.

Jack

One of the coolest parts of the changes made on the west side of downtown is the area around the Des Moines Library. The area includes a stone stream that flows from near the Pappajohn building to the library. It has been a spot we've used on several shoots. Little Jack was digging the water. Check out a few shots below.

A Family

Here are a few shots from an August photo shoot at the Rose Garden. Shooting large groups can seem overwhelming for some photographers, especially new photographers. But as soon as you are nervous you start to over think it. Over posing will ruin the best technically good photograph. Allow the subjects of the photograph to get themselves into a comfortable spot. An over posed photograph is boring, rarely unique, and not our style. Have fun, enjoy the time.

Brennan

This is a newborn shoot Ashley did last month. Little Brennan did a great job, little bit of sleep and a little bit awake. Ashley does all the newborn shoots and for good reason. It take great patience. You try to work hard to make sure everything is setup for the little one, but sometimes they just won't have any of it. You keep it warm, keep them warm, go at the newborn's pace, and let them call the shots. Sometimes the biggest twist are the older siblings. You want them in some photos, but sometimes that just doesn't work. .... and sometimes it does. Check out a few of our favorites below.

Brecken

We can't say it enough, the experience is the important part of the entire process. Whether it is family, senior, newborn, wedding, engagement, whatever other photo shoot. The experience is the real goal. The great photos are just a byproduct of the great experience.
Ashley grabbed these photos of Brecken at Water Works Park. Mom and Dad were incredible troopers and shot in the rain. Can you see some rain in the photos? Yes. Does it ruin the photos? No. Do they have a great story to tell someday when they look back at these photos.... YES! That's the point. Photos should drag you through time at 88mph back to whenever that time was. Engulf you in that moment. Bring the smells, emotions, and sights back to you. If you don't have a great experience on the photo shoot all that time traveling is for not. Let Ashley and I be your Doc Brown.

Ben

Ashley photographed little Ben at Water Works Park. Ben is at an age that is just tough to shoot. They aren't real mobile yet, strong enough to sit, stand, or sometimes even lift their head. That just means that mom and dad get to be in more of the photos. Which to us makes perfect sense given that you are one family unit, growing together and we are there to capture just a few photos of that process.

Moreno Family

We've taken photos of the Victor and his family a few times before. These were taken in Rose Garden earlier this month. I've probably posted the story of how we know Vic and his family before, but the short version is Vic was the first person I met when I moved to a new school in 1st grade. Fast forward, we each have kids and families...and the time went very fast. Check out a few of our favorites below including Vic's mini-me, anyone else think his son looks like him?

Mason

Ashley shot these photos of Mason at Grey's Lake in Des Moines. The southeast corner of the lake has become one of my favorite spots. The lighting early in the evening rivals most locations in Des Moines. This area along with the west side of the Rose Garden and across the Raccoon River Bridge in Water Works Park are a couple of our favorite spots for golden hour shots. For those who do not know, Golden Hour is the half hour before sunset and the half hour after sunset. This is when the best lighting is for photos. The sun provides an even cast of light across the sky and lighting is both smooth and even. Cloudy days, not so much. Unless you are lucky enough to catch a day when the sun is sneaking under the clouds on the horizon using the clouds as the world's largest reflector.

Hattie

Ashley photographed Hattie at Water Works Park in July. It looks like she had a good time. We use very little flash. Every once and a while we will drag our Alienbees out to do a photo shoot, but it is rare. Natural light is so much better for photos. I can spot a photo using flash from a mile away and they never look real good. Let the sun shine and we will work right through it. Using it to our advantage.

Evalyn

Ashley photographed Evalyn at Water Works Park last month. Evalyn really liked her bubbles. This is an age where as a photographer you have to let them be themselves and just chase and shoot. It sounds crazy. But it's a lot more fun then you'd think. Two year olds are probably my favorite age to shoot just because of the challenge they present. You have to work with them and within their rules. If you are patient they will warm up and give you the exact shots you are looking for. For us that means we get shots of them acting like themselves in whatever environment we are in. Ashley and I are very lucky to get to work with all of you.

Aaron

Ashley has been photographing Aaron since he was just a newborn. He is now two years old. It can NEVER be over stated how fast time flies once you have kids and they grow so fast. Take lots of photos, and I don't just mean with us, I mean with your camera, your cell phone, your video camera, draw a picture, whatever it takes to capture them at all the stages they go through. Ashley shot these downtown in the Sculpture Garden area. Two is a tough age to photograph because they are so excited about everything and extremely mobile. You have to chase and shoot and chase and shoot.

August 10, 2011

Ava and Aubrey

Ashley photographed these two at the Rose Garden back in June. With certain age little kids you have to chase and wait and chase and wait and let them be themselves. The photos turn out so so so much better when they are allowed to relax and have fun. As opposed to forcing them into some indoor setting with some cheesy props. Outdoor or in-home lifestyle photos. The only way to go.

August 8, 2011

Ethan and Audrey

We've photographed Ethan and Audrey several times. I've even photographed them since these photos were shot. They are both fun to work with and have a great time on the photo shoots. These were shot in the Rose Garden behind the Art Center in Des Moines. We've shot there quit a bit lately. Check out a few of our favorites below.

August 4, 2011

Hannah

Ashley took these photos of Hannah at the Rose Garden in June. Sometimes when you photograph kids you just have to let them go. You let them run and you chase and shoot. This tends to be our style more often than not. We want to capture kids having fun and being themselves, not posed against a fake background or looking like a statue. Your kids aren't statues. I know ours certainly aren't. Check out a few of our favorites below.

August 3, 2011

Hudson

Hudson's photos were taken at Water Works Park in Des Moines. Judging by his expression in the photos he may or may not have been up for the photo shoot. With little ones, especially in the 3-6 month range, you just never know what you are going to get. Boys are far worse than girls when it comes to wanting photos taken and it gets even worse as they get older. Girls like to dress up and have photos taken, boys want to play with frogs, toads, and snakes.

August 2, 2011

Jack

Ashley shot these photos back in June at the Rose Garden. We've been shooting at both the Rose Garden and Water Works Park a lot lately. We are definitely comfortable with both and are learning more and more about what time's of days and locations we like the most. With these hot summer days the more we have planned out ahead of time the better. Keep the shoots short and sweet by planning ahead and working quickly. Check out some of Jack's photos below.

Lumadue

We have been taking photos of the Lumadue's for several years now. We shot Brittany and Eric's engagement photos, Andy and Diana's wedding, family photos, and baby photos of Makenzie. We shot these photos in June at Gray's Lake. The southeast corner of Gray's Lake has become one of my favorite spots. The trees line up perfectly for late afternoon photos with the sun shining from behind the trees.

July 25, 2011

Nyah

We've both been lucky to be able to photograph Nyah a few times. She has huge eyes that photograph beautifully. We shot these in Valley Junction on a nice afternoon. After seeing photos of a young one in studio, it is great to get outside and get them in front of some better backgrounds. The studio is nice, but we would much much rather be outside shooting.

July 21, 2011

Tinley

Ashley shot these photos back in May. They are little Tinley's newborn photos. When I was in high school everyone always told me how fast life would go by and to slow down and enjoy it. Of course I didn't believe it when I was sitting through trigonometry or physics. However, now that I have kids I completely understand. We are always busy. The kids are growing way too fast. Before you know it photos like these are being displayed at high school graduation parties. Our kids are only 1, 3, and 4 but I know that it is coming faster than i want it to. Enjoy today and every day because there is no turning the clock back. We hope that our photos help you remember what it was like when...

July 20, 2011

Grace

There are some great unique photos of Grace in this set that Ashley shot in May. Grace was having a great time with Mom and Dad...and all of her closest friends.

July 19, 2011

Mason

A couple days ago I posted about our journey from photographing someone's wedding to photographing their kids. Such an amazing experience. This is another case of that. Mason is the son of Nick and Tera who's wedding we photographed. Mason did not appear too happy to be having his photo taken. You just have to give them time. They will warm up, get used to their surroundings, and smile. Ashley shot these at Water Works Park back in May.

July 18, 2011

Amelia

Yet another late post from back in April...my list of back posts is down to like 20 though...Ashley photographed Amelia back in April. As you will be able to tell from the photos below, she was quiet at first and not sure what to think. She did warm up and Ashley was able to capture some great shots. Even the ones where she is being more serious turned out great. They tell a different side of Amelia. It is great to tell a well rounded story of little ones. The most important thing is to capture them exactly as they are. Props overwhelm photos and take away from the subject, the person or people in them. The less the better. There is chaos and noise everywhere and from that a photo must extract meaning and purpose. To use a bunch of props only introduces noise and distraction. That being said, simple props can tell a great story when used correctly. If we just have some picnic setting, park setting, or other generic setup that we take everyones photos in...boring. Focus on the subject.

July 16, 2011

Leif and Lane

A shoot from way back in April. Ashley shot these on location at Leif and Lane's house. The lighting was amazing in their backyard. Some of these look like they were shot with an off camera light, but they weren't. Ashley used the time of day to her advantage. The sun is less powerful and can be used as a great light source. Golden hour, 1/2 hour before and after sunset. Get out and take photos during this time and you will find that you are much happier with your results.

July 15, 2011

Madeline

One of the greatest rewards Ashley and I have is to watch and be a part of your lives. We capture some of the most important times of your life through our cameras. It's an experience that is hard to explain. It's difficult to put words to what it means to be a part of such fleeting moments. Every second of life is precious and not to be taken for granted. We are very grateful that you take time to let us into your lives and learn about each and everyone of you.

Ashley and I shot Nikki and James wedding a few years ago. Now they have a child. Ashley captured these photos of Madeline not too long ago. From the first time we met Nikki and James we knew they were great people. Nikki was planning her wedding long distance and James was doing the ground work here in the area. We met with James and he seemed a little nervous about it all. Now they have a kid and she is growing fast.

July 14, 2011

Caleb

These shots are from back in May in Valley Junction. It just happened to be on a day where they were having an antique show in Valley Junction so we stuck to mainly alleyways, which isn't uncommon anyway. I used to work with Caleb's mom and in a true showing of "it's a small world", she actually already knew some Nuzum's. My cousin and his wife. Caleb was fun to work with and we had a great time. I chased him around for a while and we turned out some great shots. I have a lot of fun taking photos of 2-3 year olds. Check out a few of our favorites below.

July 1, 2011

Greta

This shoot is from back in May. I photographed Greta in a couple spots downtown. She is at the age where you just chase and chase and chase snapping the whole way. You have to have fun with little ones at this age and play with them. I get to act like a kid and they get to be kids. We have fun and the photos find a way to take themselves. I also sweat a lot and go home and take a nap.

June 30, 2011

Dylan

Another late blog entry, this one from early May. These photos of Dylan were taken at Water Works Park in Des Moines which is definitely one of the prime spots for photographers in the area. Between Water Works Park and the Rose Garden it's tough not to bump into 2 or 3 other photographers at any given time.

June 29, 2011

Neveah and Abigail

This one if from way back in April. We say it all the time, but watching kids grown from newborns to toddlers is amazing. Even if only through a few photos every couple months. The changes are amazing.

June 26, 2011

Cole

Little Cole is not so little any more. Still can't believe how much babies grow in 12 months. There is a reason to take so many photos during that first year of life. The changes happen so fast and before you know it they are one year old. It is an amazing process.

Alexander - I Love Des Moines Contest

A while back we ran our I Love Des Moines Contest. We had a photo with 10 letters from around the Des Moines area spelling out Nuzum Photo. Meet our winner....Mellissa and Andy...and Alexander technically. These are Alexander's one year photos. The were shot in the area of the sculpture garden and Locust, a favorite spot of ours recently. The cake smashing is a fun photo and luckily this one was done outside which makes it all that much better. Check out some of our favorites below...

Jaidey and Rohan

Jaidey and Rohan are a blast to take photos of. Each for different reasons. Jaidey is as photogenic as they come. Rohan is as stubborn as they get. I enjoy both for different reasons. Jaidey is easy to photograph and really enjoys the shoot. Makes taking the photos fun and they turn out great. Rohan being stubborn makes me work a little harder and the smiles I do get end up being pretty natural. Check out a few of our favorites from a recent shoot.

More Nuzum Boys

My brother Mike has three sons, I have three sons, my dad had three sons and now our cousin Aaron has 3 sons. No daughters in the bunch. Aaron and Amanda recently welcomed twin boys, Calvin and Camden. Ashley shot this photos back in April i think, yes the blog is THAT far behind. Are any Nuzum girls in the future? At least we know the family name is safe.

May 12, 2011

Mason

Ashley shot these great photos of Mason downtown at the sculpture garden. The sculpture garden has become a destination of choice because it provides some green as well as a city feel. We really like shooting there and will do so more and more.

Mason certainly enjoyed his shoot. It may just be me, but I think Mason resembles dad a little bit...judge for yourself. Below are a few of our favorites.

May 11, 2011

Jager

I recently photographed Jager's 9 month photos. His parents brought along the coolest John Deere tractor. So we headed out to the barn at Valley High School for some simulated farm photos. Jager was in an outstanding mood especially for how cool it was out. He didn't stop smiling for the entire shoot.

May 10, 2011

Annabelle

Annabelle recently turned two and we had the opportunity to photograph her for her birthday. Ashley and I have both had the opportunity to photograph her before. This time I had the honor. (I would have fought Ashley for the right to do it) Annabelle is great in front of the camera and we had such a fun time. Anytime the subject of your photographs signs thank you to you, you know it was a good shoot.

Ethan

"A two-year old is kind of like having a blender, but you don't have a top for it." - Jerry Seinfeld

Babies are a common theme with us these days. Several of our past newborn package babies are expecting new siblings this year. And as many of you know Ashley and I are expecting ourselves. It is definitely baby days around here. Ashley and I have been photographing Ethan for sometime now and he is getting bigger all the time. While he is not two yet, I am sure his mom and dad would agree with Jerry, it looks like his time as the baby is up. Check out some of Ethan's photos as well as maternity photos for the new baby below.

April 7, 2011

Camdyn

Last month Ashley took photos of 3-month old Camdyn. We've known Tricia and Brian for sometime now and took photos of their first son Hayden over his first year. I say it all the time, but they grow fast. It is unreal how quickly they change. I never believed people when they said that your children grow fast, probably because I was still in school and couldn't get done fast enough. But now that I have kids I completely understand. Take tons of photos even if it is just with your cell phone camera. You will want to be able to look back and remember because the time flies.

April 5, 2011

Weston

Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing. ~Phyllis Diller

Kids grow up incredibly fast. We have the pleasure of getting to know many people from around Central Iowa and beyond and watching them and their children grow. Our newborn packages which include several shoots over the course of the first year of a child's life have provided us unique opportunities to really get to know their families. Ashley and I have gained insight and wisdom from all of them and hopefully shared some of ours as well. Our family is growing at the same time that their's is. We can share similar life experiences and the people we photographer become a part of our family. Our kids recognize the people in the photos and sometimes know them by name.

Weston is growing fast as well. You can look back over his photo shoots and see him change. Weston's family is also growing. He will have another little sibling here soon. Ashley took these photos in March. A few of our favorites are below.

Grace

Sometimes kids look nothing like there parents ... and sometimes they look just like their parents. This would be one of those times where a kid looks just like the parents. Grace may have been a little awe struck at the camera and lights, but she did a great job. Below are a few of our favorites from her shoot.

March 28, 2011

Ashley has been shooting a lot of six month photos recently. Little Alexander is six months now and had a great time in studio. He was definitely caught on the right day to get some fun photos. Check out some of our favorites below.

Jack

Ashley has been into two things recently with kids shoots...the plexiglass mirror and black and white. So you have definitely seen some of that on the blog. Here are some recent photos of little Jack.

March 23, 2011

Jager

In early February Ashley photographed little Jager. Jager is just over six months old so now the photos become much easier. As you can see below he was having a great time and even did a little spit shine on our Plexiglas-mirror. We are definitely looking forward to getting back outside in the near future as the weather gets nicer. In the meantime check out Jager's six-month photos.

March 22, 2011

Sophia

Ashley photographed little Sophia way back in January, newborns are amazing. Everything they see is for the first time. Everything is a brand new experience. Stop and think about how many "new" experiences you have in your life. As you get older they get fewer and fewer, but for a newborn everything is new.

Our blog is a bit behind but we will be getting caught up here real soon. With wedding overload right around the corner the blog servers will be smoking.

February 22, 2011

Emmett

Emmett is Ashley's cousin's first baby and a future Hawkeye fan. Also to be noted is that Ashley has been in a bit of a black and white mood lately.

Dylan

Dylan's photoshoot was another in a recent string of shoots at the Botanical Center. When it gets cold, this is the only green place in town. However, tomorrows 60+ degree forecast gives hope for an early spring.

Wow, behind like 10 blog posts again. Here are some great shots Ashley got of little Cole at the Botanical Center in Des Moines.

Baby Camdyn

Baby Camdyn has two proud parents and one proud big brother. We were very excited to have the opportunity to take baby Camdyn's newborn photos after photographing his big brother over his first year. There aren't many words to describe what newborn babies are like...the pictures tell the story. A sleeping baby is a well photographed baby. That's for sure.

Henry

Henry has made many appearances on our blog. Henry, Mom, and Dad are officially Nuzum Photo street team members, a very exclusive club. I've taken photos of Henry and family many times. Ashley on the other hand hasn't been out to shoot them recently. However, she got to head out and capture these ones. We get to shoot so many photos with them that we are running out of places to go. This time they headed over to East Village to get some shots of Henry near Henry county on the big Iowa map. We've tried this in the past only to have Yankee Doodle Pops setup right on top of the map. This time just as they got there and started shooting...rain. This past week I photographed little Preston. It was our second shoot with him. You can see the first one from last year here. As with the first shoot he was great to work with. He did an awesome job and was really into the photos. He never really got bored and wanted to stop. We had a good time out at Water Works Park and you can check out a few of our favorites below.

November 9, 2010

Karly

Ashley photographed little Karly in Valley Junction. As we've mentioned, Valley Junction has been really popular this fall and has provided some of our best photos of the year. Baby photo shoots in urban areas around buildings always reminds me of Baby's Day Out or Look Who's Talking...not sure why. Makes me laugh. Karly is six months old and you can tell she's thinking about getting moving real soon. Movement and walking changes everything with photo shoots. You become a chaser at that point. Shoot a ton and capturing them having a good time. Check out a few of our favorites below.

Max and Zoey

Ashley recently photographed Max, Zoey, Mom, and Dad out at Water Works Park, another popular location this time of year. These two are incredibly easy to photograph and are extremely comfortable in front of the camera. They made the entire shoot a breeze. We also photographed them last year downtown near the Science Center when that old building was still just to the north east of the science center(see those here). That building is now gone, but the many photos we took in that area will live on. Check out some of our favorites from this shoot below.

The Whole Gang - Kara and Nick + Eleanor

We've shot photos of Kara, Nick, and Eleanor in the past and recently as well. We also had the recent opportunity to photograph Kara's extended family. The great variable in any photo shoot is the kids. Ages 0-2 you can pretty much count on to have a good time and have some fun. 3-5 tends to be a little more reluctant. 6-12 can't wait to get home to video games or the likes. 13 and over....well, they have better things to do....clearly. This group had kids in the lower ranges and for the most part were great to work with. We mixed in a couple fun jump photos to loosen things up and we got what we were looking for. Below are a few of our favorites.

November 5, 2010

Eleanor

We have been shooting a lot in Valley Junction. If you caught us in Juice earlier this year you know that this is one of our favorite locations. There are so many different types of backgrounds that we can use quickly. When you are photographing kids it is important to get the shots you are looking for and wrap things up before their time bomb goes off and you're done.

We photographed Eleanor earlier this year when she was six months. She is now 1 year old and Ashley photographed her in Valley Junction last week. She is great in front of the camera. The weather has been fantastic this fall and we have been able to put together some fantastic outdoor photo shoots. Below are a few of our favorites

Weston

This week Ashley photographed Weston's (just over) one year photos at the Rose Garden in Des Moines. One year photos and two year old photos tend to be our favorites. The little ones are more mobile and much more interactive. It's pretty common to just let them run around and keep shooting. Laying on the ground, rolling around, and playing peek a boo with the camera. Just another day for Ashley and I.

Aidan, Keenan, and Liam

This week Ashley and I each shot photos at the Rose Garden in Des Moines. It is one of our favorite fall locations especially in late afternoon when the sun is shining through the leaves on the west side of the park. As you can see below it creates a great fall backdrop. This week I shot photos of Aidan, Keenan, and Liam along with some whole family shots. I have three boys and they are younger than these three...but I think in terms of getting them to all look at the camera at the same time it is just as difficult. We shot, shot, and shot some more trying our best to get all eyes on the camera. We had a little leaf fight and played. One important thing to getting good photos from young boys, have fun with them. I ran around and made faces, put leaves on my head...which was actually not such a good idea...monkey see, monkey do. In the end we got some great stuff. Check it out below.

October 17, 2010

Claire

This past Wednesday I photographed little Claire. She was fantastic. She was a little shy at first, but warmed up pretty quickly when we got to the playground equipment. These were shot at a small but amazing park in West Des Moines called Quail Cove Park. It was my first time there, but I think I will be making return trips. Check out some of our favorites below.

October 15, 2010

Oliver and Company

On Sunday I had one family photo session and it was with one of our favorite wedding couples of all time, Shea and Denny. They now have little Oliver and he is growing fast. We headed out to the Rose Garden which is one of our favorite places to shoot in the fall. As the leaves start to turn and the sun comes pouring through those leaves it creates an amazing fall backdrop. Oliver was great, even though he didn't really want to smile. Check out some of our favorites below.

Twin Two Year Old Boys

On Friday I photographed twin two year old boys at Ankeny's Hawkeye Park. The goal was to capture them in a natural environment having fun and just being kids. We did exactly that. Nothing says being twin two year olds like not wanting to be in the same picture. Or running in different directions. Or playing on different playground equipment. Or not wanting to smile. Or not wanting to give up your football. These two were a ton of fun and have great personalities. They were at a playground...had to expect a little craziness. The most important part of any photoshoot is capturing the subject in the essence of the time and place. I think we definitely did that. I ran around, jumped around, and played defense in getting most of these shots. I could still use a nap.

October 7, 2010

Annabelle

Ashley photographed Annabelle downtown on Tuesday. I previously photographed Annabelle at Raccoon River Park. She was a delight then and Ashley says she was again!

Jaxon

Ashley shot Jaxon's photos at Thomas Mitchell Park east of Altoona. We had not shot there before, but the park turned out to be a great place. The leaves had turned well in a few spots and the big open spaces make for great photos.

Sarah - Two Year Old

I photographed Sarah around the Science Center of Iowa. Luckily they don't kick you out like a certain Omaha museum. Sarah was kind of timid at first, but once she warmed up she was great to photograph. Weather has been incredible lately and this day was no exception.

Connor

Connor zipped right up to two years old already. We've documented his growth over those two years and you can check that out here. See some of his two year photos below.

September 21, 2010

Bryce - 18 Months

We've photographed Bryce before. You can find Ashley's one year photo shoot with him on our blog here. We headed out to Valley Junction for this shoot and had an amazing time. Bryce was full of energy and I had a great time chasing him around Valley Junction. As you check out the photos you will notice right away how big and blue Bryce's eyes are. All natural. No photo-shopping, no excessive Lightroom work. I had a great time. Below are a few of our favorites.

September 11, 2010

Lane - Two Year

I photographed Lane earlier in the week at Water Works Park in Des Moines. He was not shy at all and we had a great time. Lane was full of energy and all over the place. Those are the shoots I love the most. I get to roll around in the grass, jump, run, and have a good time. Lane is a Hawkeye fan...or at least Dad is...but the bad news is he fumbles a lot. we had a great time and a few of our favorites are below.

Nuzum Boys

Anyone who knows anything about the Nuzums, know that they produce a lot of boys. I have two brothers and three sons, and three nephews. No sisters, no daughters, no nieces. Check out this recent photo shoot with all the third generation Nuzum boys. Trying to get six boys to smile at the same time...yikes.

September 9, 2010

Alexander

Ashley photographed Alexander at 8 days old. Newborn photos work best within the first two weeks. After that the babies are awake more and less likely to sleep through any of the shoot. In this case Alexander didn't want to sleep either. You will see Ashley's phone in the first picture with what has become the infamous white noise app running. Our son Parker needs the app to help him sleep. It just plays white noise...that's it. As you can see in the photos, eventually Alexander slept a little. Congratulations to the proud new parents.

Martin Family

Ashley and I have known the Lisa and Matt for a long time. We've been taking photos for them for about a year or so. We headed out to Gray's lake last Friday for a family and kids shoot. Gray's lake has been plagued with flooding off and on all summer. Just recently did it open back up to the public. The beach actually wasn't in too bad of condition. We shot a few there then headed around the lake to the southeast corner where the bridge was located. Timing and location are everything. We hit that part of the lake at just the right time as the sun was spilling through the trees and creating long shadows along the bridge. We had a fun time. A few of our favorites are below.

Ethan (with a Special Guest Appearance by Calen)

On Tuesday night I photographed one year photos for Ethan. Ethan has an awesome little friend, that Ashley has photographed in the past, named Calen. I had a great time photographing both of them, Ethan alone, and Ethan's family. Ethan and Calen will be good friends for a long time to come. I see many years of backyard fights, tents and forts, and makeshift bicycle ramps in their future. We shot around the science center area including the old train depot. Below are a few of our favorites.

August 30, 2010

Karly - Three Months

Three month photos are the toughest of the newborn first year set. Babies aren't quite strong enough or active enough to get photos much different than a newborn, but they aren't as sleepy or pose-able as a newborn. Ashley still does a great job with them. The key to good three month photos is in the outfits. The more the better to give some variety because the posing and photo options are limited. Cute outfits, cute photos.

Jolie - Six Months

Another baby photo shoot that I recently shot. We took little Jolie out to Valley Junction for some more interesting scenery outside of the studio...we pretty much always recommend heading outside over being in the studio. The day of the shoot was one of Jolie's non-smiling days. She was as serious as could be. We tried and tried but she did not want to smile. We got some great photos...but only caught a couple smiles.

Hayden - One Year Photos

Recently I have been shooting most photo shoots including babies, which normally Ashley would shoot. It is a nice change of pace for me and I have had a ton of fun with it. I shot Hayden's one year photos at Ledges State Park shortly after the recent floods. The lower canyon road was closed and for good reason. Once we hiked down into the park we found the park to be a mess. The creek had flooded severely and caused damage to the roads and surrounding land. We found a small space and shot what we could down there before hiking back up and catching a few more along the way. Below are a few of our favorites.

Team Moreno

I have known Vic for a long time. I had to change schools one time and Vic was the first person from my new school that I'd met. We lived just a few houses from each other so it was easy to hang out all the time. It was also easy to fight in my front yard, which we did on more than one occasion. Or fight on the school bus, which we did on more than on occasion. It also provided the opportunity for our families to get to know one another. Which lead to many good memories through the years. That was many years ago. Vic now has a beautiful family and awesome kids. Vic and Libby recently welcomed a little girl into the world. Ashley had the opportunity to photograph Team Moreno. Below are a few of our favorites. Congratulations Vic and LIbby.

Henry turns 2

On Wednesday the 30th of June, I had another opportunity to take photos of Henry. Henry is definitely one of my favorite photo subjects. He makes me feel like a kid again. Henry likes to run and run and run....and so I chase and chase and chase. I quickly snapped over 1300 photos of Henry and his parents. You have to take that many just get a few where he is stopped or looking at the camera. They were setting up for 80/35 but we were still able to get the photos we wanted and they turned out great. I'm still trying to catch me breath from all the chasing. Below are a few of our favorites.

Blog Catch Up....Eight Shoots Worth

Ashley and I have been off the charts busy as of late. Not just with photo shoots and weddings, but around the house preparing for our new baby. So we have fallen dramatically behind on our blogging. That means.....blog overload. We are 8 shoots behind on the blog. I typically like to take time and talk about each photo shoot, how things went, and my general story. Unfortunately this far behind it will just have to be a photo bonanza...so here goes....

Greta

Steve and I had a GREAT photo shoot last Thursday with little Greta. She is a very happy one year old. We shoot the photos at the Claire and Miles Mills Rose Garden in Des Moines. Unfortunately the mosquitoes were out in full force...Steve's legs still itch today. He typically likes to wear shorts on photo shoots since he is climbing things, laying in the grass, and generally all over the place. It was a mistake Thursday. Greta didn't seem to mind. She was as happy when we finished the shoot as when we started. Mom, Dad, and Greta had a great time and it really shows in the photos. Below are a few of our favorites.

Brady

Brady was NOT interested in the taking of his photos. There is an age band where they just do not want anything to do with a photo shoot in studio. From time to time you have to just go capture them in their own element. Playing in the mud, climbing trees, or building Lego fortresses. Brady is most likely one of those boys. Here are a few of our favorites from the shoot.

Connor just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It is amazing to see just how fast little ones grow up. It seems even faster when you look back through the past photos...

Bryce

Bryce is the son of Erika and Matt. We have known Erika a long time. Erika and I went to the same school and were in the same grade. It was great to hear from her when they asked us to get some photos of her son. Ashley always does little kids and indoor family sessions so I tend to miss out on those, but she said this one was fun and a breeze. Bryce was pretty excited throughout the shoot. Below are a few of our favorites.

Leilani and Landen

On Saturday Ashley photographed Leilani and Landen. These two were unique in many ways. Leilani was born for photo shoots. She was an awesome poser and came ready to shoot shoot shoot. The key to any good photo shoot is how well your dress flares when you spin, just ask Leilani. Landon on the other hand wasn't too interested in the shoot, but as with any kid a little bribing always works. In this case it was taking photos of Leilani that got him to take his own. Below are a few of our favorites.

March 16, 2010

Calen

On Sunday I shot 6 month photos for little Calen. He was great to have in studio. Calen couldn't stop smiling and was a breeze to take photos of. Mom and Dad wanted to get some shots with Calen in jeans, but unfortunately forgot the jeans....luckily we have two young boys and 6-month jeans were dug out of a rubber-maid in no time. Below are a few of my favorites.

March 15, 2010

Jolie

Last Friday I photographed little Jolie. She was exactly two weeks old on the day of the shoot. She was also WIDE awake. Typically we can get a newborn to sleep for at least a little bit so we can capture them in their natural sleeping habitat. Not this time. The shoot did require a little improvisation....aka....pacifier. It's hard not to take great photos of newborns. Everything is a new experience to them. Every moment something new. Beautiful. Below are a few of my favorites.

March 11, 2010

Weston

Last night I photographed little Weston, who was all smiles to start off the session, but between outfit changes a missing a nap quickly lost his interest in cheesing it for the camera. Still we managed to get a few great shoots of Weston with mom and dad.

Carsen, Erin, and Evan

Erin, Evan and Carsen came in for a session late Friday evening. The twins recently turned 6 months old and Carsen just turned 4. Carsen was everything you would expect a 4 year old to be in a photo shoot...ultra posing and ready to be done. With those two things combined his part of the session was quickly completed. Happy 4th birthday Carsen.

Ethan

Mom and Dad always come prepared and this time was no exception. Once again we got some great shoots with little Ethan.

Presley

She is the second little girl I have photographed in the last month who turned 2 on the 29th of February. She was quite the little ballerina for me...once mom and dad offered her jelly beans. Happy 2nd birthday Presley.

Family Photos - Melanie

On Saturday Ashley and I photographed family photos for Melanie. We started out at the Botanical Center in Des Moines. In the winter this can be a tough place to shoot photos. There are a lot of people in a small space and lots of photographers love to go there for photos, professional and amateur. We ran across at least 5 other photo sessions that were going on. After shooting what we could there, without getting too many people in the backgrounds of the photos, we headed to the studio where the two girls wore custom make tutus. Mom spent a lot of time putting them together and they looked great in the photos. Ashley selected a few of her favorites to share below.

February 24, 2010

Jack

You have got to love the kids that come in to the studio and want to just go go go. That was definitely Jack. Once I mentioned doing a photo sicking his tongue out he was hooked on it, along with many other versions of his own made up funny faces. He loved having me take one and then running back to check it out on the camera. So here is Jack and a few of his funny faces.

February 22, 2010

Caleb

Ashley has photographed little Caleb several times now. Each time he gets more and more comfortable with the whole photo shoot idea. This time he really came out of his shell and had a great time. You can check out the photos below.

Teagan and CJ

Teagan just hit the one-year milestone and her big brother CJ just turned 6 years old. These two are great to photograph. Happy belated birthdays Teagan and and CJ.

Earlier this week I photographed little Greta and boy is she on the move. She is your typical 9 month old, crawling away as soon as you set her lose. Below are a few of my favorites.

Last week Ashley photographed Mayzie and Theo at Greenwood Park.  The weather has been unseasonably COLD, but we are making the shoots fast and getting everyone back to the warmth quickly.  The good news is the photos don't really show just how cold it is.  Below are a few of our favorites.

Ethan

Ethan is your typical three year old.  He is bouncy, anxious, and has a short attention span.  I recently had the opportunity to photograph Ethan at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines, IA.  Ethan was a little shy at first, but warmed up rather quickly.  He was ready to pose and try out any of the fun ideas I had.  As kids get older you can actually work with them during photo shoots which makes it much easier than photographing newborns up to two year olds.  Something happens when they turn three and things get easier.  We hung out near the nature lodge for a little while capturing some posey photos of Ethan and then turned him lose on the playground to have a little fun.  We finished up the photo shoot with some shots down by the water.  Ethan, Mom, and Dad were awesome to work with.  Below are a few of our favorites.

Preston

Last week Ashley and I photographed Preston downtown.  Preston is just over 1 year old and a GREAT smiler!  He was awesome to photograph and did perfect, even with lots of little distractions all over the place.  We shot Preston's photos in an urban area of Downtown on a Friday evening, it was a risk that it would be busy and overrun with people, but we lucked out and things were very calm.  Below are a few of our favorites.  Congratulations Preston on turning 1!

Hunter Turns 1

Little Hunter visited our studio a while back when he turned six months old.  Now Hunter is turning 1!  They really do grow that fast.  Cole was also along for this photo shoot and spent most of this one taking photos of dad with the cell phone camera phone.  (Actually, they didn't turn out that bad.)  Hunter was great on the photo shoot and as with all photo shoots with young ones you just have to play along with them.  Ashley was behind the camera for this entire shoot.  Below are a few of our favorites.  Congratulations Hunter!

Lincoln

On Tuesday Night Ashley and I had the awesome opportunity to photograph 2 year old Lincoln.  Anyone out there that has a 2 year old or older knows what it's like to try and take their pictures.  Now every once in a while you can get them to slow down to take a "cheese" shot with the cartoon grin and squinted eyes.  It is better to let them run and run and run until they give up and just sit.  Lincoln was no exception.  We headed over to Water Works Park in Des Moines.  Lincoln was pretty shy at first and you can definitely see that in some of the shots.  He was really scared of me as I was holding our giant sun diffuser.  So he was unsure about that.  After some running around and snapping shots of him all over the place, he was much more comfortable with Ashley and I...mostly Ashley.  We were able to get some great shots after waiting him out...and some from the beginning of the shoot as well.  Thanks for a great time Mr. Lincoln!

Aidan, Keenan, and Liam

1, 3, and 5...all boys!  I grew up in a family of three boys just about the same age difference as these three.  I'm sure my parents can find some common ground with these three's parents.  On Tuesday Ashley photographed Aidan, Keenan, and Liam.  The boy's were, well, boys.  The great thing is that when they act natural you get such natural pictures.  It is always better for them to be interactive and have a good time then to get tense and try to force them into static poses.  They are kids, not statues!  Ashley had a great time with the shoot and below are a few favorites!

Jada

Last night Ashley took photos of our friend Jenna's daughter Jada.  Jada may have been the most photogenic person we have ever photographed.  Ashley was working with her and without hesitation or instruction Jada was self posing and shifting expression.  In one moment serious and stern, and in the next laughing and being playful.  Ashley took just a few in studio and then we headed downtown to shoot some photos.  Jada had a great time and it's easy when you are out taking photos and having fun.  She was amazing in front of the camera and did a great job.  Below are just a few, with more than usual, of our favorites.

Gabby and Shae

Last night I got the opportunity to photography 5 year old Gabby and her little sister Shae.  They were wonderful to work with.  Gabby was very educational, informing me that Ariel, her favorite princess, has red hair, not blue, and she was also a big help changing backdrops.  Shae is just a little charmer.  Her face is always changing, you can't help but smile when photographing her.  Here are a few sneak peeks from the shoot.  Enjoy!

Henry's One!

Last night Ashley and I photographed Henry's one year photos.  We went downtown near the old train depot and also ventured near the capital building.  Henry might very well be the most mobile one year old we've encountered.  We had to chase him up and down the dock, alley, and sidewalk just to catch some photos.  Henry was awesome and the only time he got upset was when we stopped moving to take a few family pictures.  Henry will have one story to tell some day, as we ventured to the capital building, i had forgotten that they were filming the new movie The Experiment.  We crashed the set, but stayed out of the way.  Below are a few of our favorites shots.

Ashley and I photographed Anna and Stevie this past weekend.  We always have a lot of fun when we get the chance to photograph these two.  Stevie has the insta-smile.  You try to catch him with a natural smile, but some how he turns it right back into a card board box smile.  He definitely knows when the camera is on him.
