Kites

A few weeks ago we took our two sons out flying kites. We'd tried before, but they just didn't have an interest. For whatever reason they really had an interest this day. We shot some video and pieced it together with an Arcade Fire song. Check it out... and go here to see it in HD.

And now some pictures of people taking pictures...

At this weekend's wedding with Carmen and Ron we encountered a LOT of people taking photos. Which we ALWAYS encourage. We want as many people taking photos as possible. We are only two ..(or three).. people and can't be everywhere at the same time. We love that everyone has a certain desire to capture their own photos with their own cameras. Regardless of the fact that we give all digital negatives to each wedding couple, everyone wants to take and create their own photos. It's the beauty of photography. No matter your skill level or experience you want to try and capture some great photos. Chad, Ashley, and I captured some of that in our lenses this weekend...including each other. Here are a few of the shots. Enjoy.

Carmen and Ron

This past Saturday, Steve, I, and one of our new assistants Chad Doty shot Carmen and Ron's West Des Moines wedding. The wedding took place at the Hy-Vee Conference Center. It was a typical April day...rainy with intermittent dry spells. This one had some of the best planning we've ever done. We had originally planned to shoot the outside photos between the ceremony and reception. Pretty typical plan, however, Steve had been watching radar all day and mad his best Ed Wilson guess that it was going to put an end to our outdoor photos if we didn't get them done sooner...Ed's job might be in Jeopardy. Steve was right on. We got all indoor formals and outside candid formal shoots done in no less than an hour and 20 minutes. At one hour and 22 minutes, it started raining.

This was the first wedding we had shot at the Hy-Vee Conference Center and we were incredibly impressed by the layout and organization. It can definitely be compared to the Meadows at Prairie Meadows. We had a great time, big thanks to Chad (whom you will see more of soon), to Carmen and Ron's family, and especially to Carmen and Ron, congratulations! Below are a few of our favorites.

One more thing, if any future bride wants to talk to a bride about breaking out some serious dancing at their reception, talk to Carmen. Unbelievable moves in a wedding dress.

Greta

Steve and I had a GREAT photo shoot last Thursday with little Greta. She is a very happy one year old. We shoot the photos at the Claire and Miles Mills Rose Garden in Des Moines. Unfortunately the mosquitoes were out in full force...Steve's legs still itch today. He typically likes to wear shorts on photo shoots since he is climbing things, laying in the grass, and generally all over the place. It was a mistake Thursday. Greta didn't seem to mind. She was as happy when we finished the shoot as when we started. Mom, Dad, and Greta had a great time and it really shows in the photos. Below are a few of our favorites.

Jen and Family

On Monday Steve and I photographed maternity photos for Jen and family. We shot them on a family farm near Norwalk. The setting was perfect for some truly unique photos. Little Grace wasn't cooperative the entire time, but she was cooperative enough as you can see. She was breaking smiles through every once and a while. We had a great time. Below are a few of our favorites.

Andrea and Lloyd

This past weekend we shot Andrea and Lloyd's wedding in West Des Moines. It was a personal ceremony followed by a reception. The wedding was held at a new hotel in the Jordan Creek area. The place was beautiful inside and out. Andrea and Lloyd had originally discussed getting married in the Rose Garden, since they decided it wouldn't work out, we wanted to get some photos with them there anyway. We headed to the Rose Garden between the ceremony and reception. Andrea and Lloyd's family were a ton of fun and got along very well. They were openly joking with each other and having a great time. We then headed back to the hotel were we got more shots before letting them head to the reception. Congratulations Andrea and Lloyd!

Kate and Matt

Kate and Matt were married on April 10. The wedding and reception took place in Bondurant, IA. April weddings have been great to us the last couple of years. We have been able to get shots outside at every one. You never know what April has in store in terms of weather, but April 10th was a beautiful day. We had a great time working with the entire family. We took some shots in "downtown" Bondurant....is there a downtown...? We then took the wedding party over to Lake Petoka for some shots. It was a busy day at the lake so there were a lot of people around. Didn't stop us. We had some fun and got some great shots. No broken ankles while jumping off of a road barrier. As many of you know, our #1 rule is no injuries on photo shoots. Although that doesn't mean we won't risk injury...you just can't GET injured. Congratulations to Kate and Matt!

Brady

Brady was NOT interested in the taking of his photos. There is an age band where they just do not want anything to do with a photo shoot in studio. From time to time you have to just go capture them in their own element. Playing in the mud, climbing trees, or building Lego fortresses. Brady is most likely one of those boys. Here are a few of our favorites from the shoot.

The Weather and Something from the Archive

All of the great weather we are experiencing right now reminds me of how lucky we are in Iowa to have good snowy winters and warm sunny summers, rainy crisp springs and vibrant mild falls. It also reminded me of this pic from a wedding last year. One of my favorite jump photos.

Shelley and Nathan

On Saturday Steve and I photographed engagement photos for Shelley and Nathan. We will be photographing their wedding late this summer. This photo shoot started out at the Botanical Center downtown and ended with some shots near Ikonix Studio downtown. From the very beginning we knew we had some great shots. The Botanical Center is an interesting place to shoot. There are usually lots of people around, especially other photographers, and when sunny the lighting can be spotty. When this happens it can be a struggle to avoid hot spots. Saturday, however, the lighting was great with a mix of clouds outside. We then headed outside downtown for a few more shots. Steve and I hang out in all the cool places. Alleys, under bridges, and in and around run down buildings. Those locations make for some of the coolest photos. Below are a few of our favorites shots from the botanical center and downtown.

Brittany and Nate

This past Saturday Steve had the opportunity to get out and photograph engagement photos for Brittany and Nate. They started out shooting in Valley Junction and finished up taking photos at Raccoon River Park. The morning was kind of chilly, especially in the shade, but as you can see from the photos they had a great time. Brittany and Nate's dog Chewy made sure to get in a few photos. Chewy was excited and all the birds hanging around the lake kept him from being completely focused. They had a great time. Below are a few of our favorites.

Connor

Connor just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It is amazing to see just how fast little ones grow up. It seems even faster when you look back through the past photos...

Newborn
Four Months
Seven Months
Nine Months
One Year

It is easy to reflect on this growth each time he is in the studio. Check below for some of Connor's latest photo shoot.
